What is the Technical Intern Training Program?

The Technical Intern Training Program is a system that enables young and middle-aged workers from overseas to come to Japan as technical intern trainees and acquire practical skills and knowledge through training and work at Japanese companies and other organizations .

Through their experience in Japan, trainees not only acquire occupational skills but also further develop and master those skills through practical experience in the workplace.

After returning to their home countries, they are expected to apply the skills, knowledge, and experience they have acquired and developed in Japan to contribute to the economic and industrial development of their respective countries[cite: 1].

In other words, the fundamental purpose of the Technical Intern Training Program is to develop human resources who can contribute to the industrial development of their home countries through the transfer of Japanese technologies, skills, and knowledge.

Number and Duration of Technical Intern Trainees

Maximum Number of Technical Intern Trainees

The number of technical intern trainees that a company can accept each year is determined by the number of full-time employees of the host company.

For example, for a company with 30 or fewer full-time employees, up to three technical intern trainees can be accepted in the first year. In the second year, the company can accept an additional three trainees, bringing the total to six trainees. In the third year, another three trainees can be accepted, bringing the total to nine trainees.

Since the standard period of stay for technical intern trainees in Japan is three years, the trainees who arrived in the first year will generally return to their home country in the fourth year. At that point, the company can accept three new trainees to replace them.

Therefore, from the third year onward, a company with 30 or fewer full-time employees can have up to nine technical intern trainees in Japan at any given time, subject to the applicable regulations and requirements.
